Editing

Invisible Editing

This clip is an example of invisible editing because the edits between shots are not very noticeable and is therefore called "invisible editing. " The smooth editing is used to appear less noticeable so that the audience become absorbed and immersed into the film. In order for the editing to appear smooth and needs to have good continuity by having good match on action, keeping to the rule of thirds and 180-degree rule. Invisible editing works especially well in horror films because the audience feels drawn in and worried for the characters in the movie and allows them to become scared when there is a sudden surprise. In this clip the pace of the editing is also used to build tension and suspense for the audience and the editing also draws them in and involves them in the situation. The editing in this clip speeds up when it becomes more intense and changes to the pace of the music, this also makes the audience feel more involved and tense because it makes the sequence far more dramatic and seems more dangerous.

Montage editing

Montages are compilations of multiple different shots of short length instead of showing the whole story; montages often show something condensed into a shorter time period. Montages are a convention of comedy or sport movies more than horror movies, so it is unlikely to be used in our opening title sequence.

This is an example of montage editing used in a horror film and it is used in this scenario to give context to the audience and summarise the character in a short space of time while still leaving some mystery of him. Like many other montages, this one includes a non diegetic soundtrack over the montage so that it flows more fluently without sounds abruptly changing.

Questionnaire

Below is a questionnaire I created asking people different questions about horror films, for instance how old they are, what types of horror films they like, what props should be included in horror films, etc. This is important, as it gives me an idea of how my opening title could be created, for example what props I should use, different effects, etc and at what age group my opening title should be targeted at.
